## Choosing the setup, deploying it, checking what it recovers

01

### The setup and your infrastructure

Three setups exist, and the right one depends on what you already run. The choice is made with your technical teams.

- **Through your CDN**: Cloudflare, Akamai, Fastly or another, the tag is served from your domain without changing your hosting
- **Through your web server or load balancer**: the same outcome when your architecture has no CDN in front of it
- **With a tag management server**: the setup Google recommends, combining the CDN and [sGTM](https://edgeangel.co/en/data-foundations/gtm-sgtm)
- **The same-origin constraint**: script serving and collection travel through two distinct paths on your own domain, which drives the configuration
- **What you already have**: some server-side tagging setups already cover part of this, and we look before proposing work

02

### Deployment and QA

A collection setup is reviewed like everything else: what leaves, from where, and with which parameters.

- **Framing with your teams**: who owns the CDN, who deploys, and what release window
- **Path configuration**: the script serving path and the collection path, declared on both sides
- **Collection QA**: every request read back parameter by parameter, following the method of [our tracking offering](https://edgeangel.co/en/data-foundations/web-tracking)
- **Consent Mode preserved**: the setup waives no obligation, and [compliance](https://edgeangel.co/en/data-foundations/rgpd-compliance) is verified after the switch as before
- **Monitoring**: an alert rule on collection volumes, because an infrastructure setup breaks with infrastructure changes

03

### What it changes, and how to measure it

The gain is observed, not assumed. We measure it before and after on your own account.

- **What Google reports**: an average 14 % conversion uplift, and over 20 % on Demand Gen campaigns, figures published by Google on 10 September 2026
- **What we measure**: the volume of conversions reported before and after, on your account, over a comparable window
- **The effect on bidding**: a fuller signal changes what automated strategies can aim at, and that reads in [Google Ads](https://edgeangel.co/en/performance-acquisition/google-ads)
- **What the setup does not solve**: a visitor who declines stays a decline, and a parameter missing from the tagging plan stays missing

The tool

## Google Tag Gateway, our reading

The exact name is **Google tag gateway for advertisers**. It lets you deploy the Google tag from your own infrastructure, hosted on your website's domain, through the content delivery network, load balancer or web server you already run. The site then loads the tag from its own domain, and part of the measurement requests travel the same path.

Google documents three setups: CDN alone, with a tag management server, and **the combination of both, which it marks as recommended**. One technical constraint drives everything: the CDN setup requires a same-origin configuration, with two distinct paths on your domain, one to serve the scripts, one for collection.

Updated September 2026

### An infrastructure problem, not a tagging one

What this addresses is simple to state: a share of visitors never loads the measurement scripts, because a blocker, an extension or a browser policy stops them first. The tagging is right, the measurement plan is sound, and the data does not arrive. **The tag gateway moves the serving point**: scripts leave from your domain, which makes them indistinguishable from the rest of your site. It is not a consent workaround, and it changes nothing about what you are allowed to collect.

### The reported gain, and what to do with it

Google publishes figures, and they deserve to be quoted with their origin: **14 % more conversions on average**, and **over 20 % on Demand Gen campaigns**, in a post dated 10 September 2026. These are Google's internal data, attributable but not auditable from the outside. We report them because they give an order of magnitude, and we then measure on your account: conversions reported before and after, over a comparable window. That is the only figure that commits us.

### Where it stops, and what matters more

The setup recovers data lost in transit. It creates none. A visitor who declines stays a decline, a parameter missing from the tagging plan stays missing, and a conversion happening off-site does not report any better. **On a setup whose collection is already incomplete upstream, the gain will be marginal**: that is why we look at the tagging first. The tag gateway sits on a healthy collection chain, it does not replace one.

## Frequently asked questions about Google Tag Gateway

### Does it work around visitor consent?

No, and it must not be presented that way. The setup changes where scripts are served from, not what you are allowed to collect. Consent Mode still applies, the CMP still gathers consent, and a decline stays a decline. What the setup recovers is data lost in transit for consenting visitors.

### Do you already need a tag management server?

No, the two are distinct. The tag gateway can sit on a CDN, a load balancer or a web server alone. Google does recommend combining both, which pairs first-party serving with control over outgoing flows. If you already run server-side, the work is shorter.

### What gain can you expect?

Google reports 14 % more conversions on average, and over 20 % on Demand Gen, in a post dated 10 September 2026. These are its own, non-auditable data. The real gain depends mostly on the share of your visitors currently blocking scripts, and on the quality of your tagging upstream. We measure before and after on your account.

### Who needs to be involved on your side?

The team that owns the CDN, the load balancer or the web server, since the configuration happens there. We frame the setup, provide the paths to declare and review collection after the switch. The intervention window is short, most of the work being to verify what actually leaves afterwards.
